I was just reading about a lawn care company in Illinois that has no desire to use eco friendly product or even keep a green motive in mind while they do lawncare. I like that you mentioned wildlife. If you are having wild visitors, you are probably on the right track. Plus, bird baths and hummingbird fingers add so much excitement to a yard. A yard without animal friends is boring and dull. I hate it when house owners scare off critters and other animals because they are afraid they'll do damage . There are ways to make sure they don't harm any of your plants or themselves without yelling and screaming at them.

Cool post, I live in Scottsdale where maintaining a healthy lawn can be tough! I found this site that answers a lot of common question about lawn installation in Arizona, thought I'd pass it along! Arizona Sod Frequently Asked Questions

Thank you for your comments and encouragement to keep lawns eco-friendly, I think the importance of reducing our impact on the planet cannot be underestimated. The great thing about eco-friendly lawns is that they're also safer for our children and pets! Enjoying a healthy green lawn should include being able to walk on it and play on it any time without worrying about harmful chemicals.

This is a great list. In the near future, when we lose the mountains of snow i'd like to turn my backyard into somewhat of a japanese garden, and i believe i will be taking the green road. Thanks for tips.

We have only been at our present location for a short time and the backyard does need a fair bit of loving.

Even though our backyard is our sanctuary the lawn is more like a roller coaster for ants. The previous owners must have driven their 4-wheelers over it in the spring or something but it needs work.

We haven't applied any treatments to our lawn but when we do it will be eco-friendly.

I agree with most of your points, except maybe the suggestion about inviting woodland creatures to live in your yard. I'm fine with birds and the like, but I've had real big problems with squirrels in the past.

In fact, you talk about grilling, I had a squirrel eat right through one of my propane lines on my grill. That was really frustrating.

Well, maybe I'm a bit bias now because of that, but I do whatever I can to keep squirrels away.
