Just recently I started a small job for a new client. All it consisted of was building a railroad tie box around a child play area. When I presented the estimate, it was for a box that would gradually step up and down to follow the elevation of the property. The client decided he wanted to make the entire thing all one level. I obliged and one side was over 2 feet tall. Now that is dangerous for a 2 year old, and I explained that, but he decided he was correct so we built it. The client through a fit when he got the bill and wanted it to be the same price as what he had gotten in the estimate. Not possible since the original estimate called for 28 ties, and the new one had about 105. well we reworked the box twice more before he finally let me do what i originally intended, just longer because he already had about 65 ties that could no longer be returned. He still did not understand why it would cost more (do you ever feel like there are no more intelligent people left). I explained, you have double the ties, a couple more cubic yards of mulch, and not to mention the completely wasted three days of labor that was spent rebuilding. He thought there was still something wrong. Now the client works for a tv company, a very well known one at that. He makes a very large salary, and before we started the job bragged about it often. What got the bill paid you ask, an insult to ego. As we where discussing the bill, I said “Whats $X,XXX.00 to a guy like you. I thought you had it like that”, now honestly, I said it as a joke, he took it very seriously and went and got a check to prove me wrong. Some people are nuts.
